Is it okay to put sand in the following plants to get rid of these gnats?

The no salt sand, just a thin layer, cuts the gnats and the hatching lauvae. The flying gnats do not live long. Your vinegar with a drop of dish soap in it will attract the gnats and drown them. They seem to want to fly in your face. Very annoying. Gnats multiply like crazy.
